Sysinco is the home of my independent technology work. Since 2004, I have worked across products, systems, operations and emerging technology, often where understanding the problem matters as much as choosing the technology.
My work has ranged across product development, enterprise and operational software, technology implementation, process improvement and practical problem solving.
I tend to begin by understanding what is actually happening: the problem, the surrounding system, the constraints and the intended result. That may mean questioning an inherited assumption or reconsidering how the problem has been framed.
Different problems call for different approaches. Sometimes a conventional architecture or process is the right answer. Sometimes another technology, another domain or a small experiment reveals a useful option.
Use technology to do something genuinely useful for people and communities, and find a sustainable way to keep doing it.
Technology becomes useful when it helps someone understand something better, solve a real problem, improve a system or turn an idea into something that can be tested, built or acted on.
AI is a major area of my current work, particularly where it affects learning, reasoning, automation and human judgment. It is not always the right tool.
I see large language models and other AI systems as extensions of human capability, not replacements for it. They can help us explore, reason and work more effectively, but they do not remove the need for human understanding and judgment.
The practical question is where AI adds something useful, what it may be missing and where a person still needs to set the objective, judge the result or take responsibility. If another approach would serve the problem better, I would rather use that.

Darren Soo is a Canadian technologist, founder and independent technology consultant whose work spans product development, enterprise and operational technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning and reasoning systems.
He has spent more than two decades working with practical technology problems and is currently developing A Curiosity Project, a learning framework and product focused on curiosity, disciplined inquiry and deeper human capability in the AI era. His separate work on PI explores evidence-governed reasoning over changing entities and conditions.
Across this work, he is interested in problems that benefit from more than one angle and in how useful ideas can be tested, built or put into practice.
